Family
paddocks

The Family Paddocks are the iconic heart of Levantine Hill. And we mean heart in every sense of the word.

After transforming what was once just a steep, rocky hill into the perfect place to grow grapes, Elias Jreissati named each of the blocks of vines after the people closest to his heart – his wife Colleen and daughters Samantha, Melissa and Katherine.

The four wines that are created from the grapes grown on those blocks are all single vineyard wines, inspired by the Grand Cru wines of Burgundy and First Growths of Bordeaux. The Bordeaux blends use the same percentage of grape varieties as traditionally used in France.

Colleen’s Paddock Pinot Noir, Samantha’s Paddock Mélange Traditionnel and Melissa’s Paddock Syrah are released at least four years after vintage, while Katherine’s Paddock Chardonnay is released at least three years after vintage.

These wines are the best of the best and only a limited number of bottles are produced for each label each year. So we always recommend that you order in advance.

Katherine’s Paddock Chardonnay
Geographically a mirror image of Samantha’s Paddock, this block is located in the perfect spot to capture both the cool breeze blowing from the Great Dividing Range and the morning sun afforded by its east-facing orientation. Due to its elevation, angle and aspect, it is historically harvested much later than traditional Valley-floor Chardonnay. It is our ode to the Grand Cru Montrachet of Burgundy. Pronounced characters of pear skin, marzipan, cashew and wild rice combine with a rich textural interplay of chalk and creaminess. This wine amplifies all of the subtle elements intrinsic to the make-up of our Estate Chardonnay and presents them in an “all dials set to eleven” riot of balanced natural acidity, rich varietal expression and voluminous persistent flavours.

Colleen’s Paddock Pinot Noir
Inspired by the Grand Crus-sourced red wines of Burgundy, Colleen’s Paddock is perfectly positioned in a suntrap on a steep slope on the lowest and coolest part of the family estate. The steepness of the vineyard provides huge variations in ripening times, which means fruit picking in this tiny Pinot Noir block takes place over many weeks to ensure perfect ripeness in each small aliquot. It features a restrained, brooding and beguiling nose with hints of cranberry, sour cherry, wild raspberry, earth, stalks and charry oak. The palate weaves an uncommon mélange of supple fruits, herbal flavours and savoury elements through fine, integrated tannins, combining lightness with richness.

Melissa’s Paddock Syrah
Melissa’s Paddock, our smallest vineyard, is inspired by the very best Hermitage examples of the Rhône Valley. It is bottled as “Syrah” in recognition of its refined structure, savoury flavour and eloquently spiced nuance.

It features a subtly brooding and slowly unfurling complex nose, featuring rumours of blackberry, liquorice, stalk, tar, spice, Christmas mince pies and charry oak. It features fine building with carriage of fruit through to the reverberating finish.

Samantha’s Paddock Melange Traditionnel
The block that the experts said could not be planted. The steepness of the land and the presence of underground, rocky seams and outcrops were thought to be insurmountable. But by the grace of god and the use of a diamond-tipped drilling rig for seven months, we installed the perfect vineyard. Planted to the traditional Left Bank varietals, Samantha’s Paddock is our antipodean sonnet to the Premier Cru vineyards of Bordeaux. It features restrained fruit characters with subtle hints of cassis, blackberry, fennel, oak and leather. A melange of fruit compote melds with savoury flavours, the silky texture winds through chalky tannins on the youthful tightly wound palate.
